The StrongFit Equation, Part 3: Reward vs. Value

At it’s core, the principles that underlie StrongFit are a system of learning. As the system continues to evolve, so do the structures that shape it and the concept of reinforcement learning presents a powerful allegory to how humans grow and adapt. Though easily buried by an abstract algorithm, the basic of Q-learning is this: success is found in moving beyond our mistakes and that our intention within the present matters. This is part three of breaking down the Q-learning algorithm and what we can learn about human nature from this advancement in machine learning. The measure of rewards is just a scoring system. This is demonstrated in most education systems where 9/10 = A, 8/10 = B and so

Human, Badger, Lizard: The Polyvagal Theory for Athletes and Coaches

If you’ve ever studied the nervous system, you’ve most likely learned it as a two-fold mechanism - the parasympathetic versus the sympathetic system. This model creates a spectrum from ‘rest and digest’ mode to the ‘fight or flight’ response according to the amount of stress experienced. This theory assumes that we begin in a parasympathetic state and gradually move towards the sympathetic mechanism as stress increases, somewhere along the line crossing a border that puts us in one system or the other. Too much time spent in ‘fight or flight’ mode would trigger a necessity to remove the stressor and return to a state of ‘rest and digest.’ The arch concept, however, paints a different picture

The StrongFit Equation Part 2

At it’s core, the principles that underlie StrongFit are a system of learning. As the system continues to evolve, so do the structures that shape it and the concept of reinforcement learning presents a powerful allegory to how humans grow and adapt. Though easily buried by an abstract algorithm, the basic of Q-learning is this: success is found in moving beyond our mistakes and that our intention within the present matters. This is part two of breaking down the Q-learning algorithm and what we can learn about human nature from this advancement in machine learning. In Q-learning, the learning rate determines to what extent that new information will override old information. Mathematically, wh
